Animosity

“So, that’s the plan,” Krill asserted. “Does anyone have any objections?”

Alex didn’t even bother looking up from his phone. He felt exhausted after a night of restless sleep, and the last thing he needed was to waste his energy on the mediocre plan that Krill had come up with.

“So, let me get this straight,” Saniya questioned. “You’re going to set up a fake buyer to arrange a meeting with the Pincays. And once they’ve reached an agreement, you’ll move in?”

“We catch them red-handed,” Krill said. “We’ve gotten a few of their people in jail. If we offer them a way to get stronger, they won’t refuse to take it.”

“I think it sounds good,” Alex agreed. “Let’s roll with it.”

Krill looked surprised for a minute, and then he said, “Well, I must say it’s pleasant to have you on our side once in a while.”

“It’s your idea,” Alex said. “You should run the operation.”

Agent Krill frowned, clearly taken back by how agreeable Alex was being.

“Let me know if there is anything you need me to do,” he said with a smile and then walked out of the conference. A few minutes later, Dale approached him, looking suspicious.

“What are you up to?” he asked.

“Yeah,” Saniya said, coming behind him. “What are you up to?”

“He’s an idiot,” Alex grumbled. “Think about it. You really think the Pincay family doesn’t have any spies on the police force. Krill’s plan will keep them distracted while we move on with our own operation.”

“Director Crow sent him here so we can all work together,” Saniya said. “Going behind his back isn’t the right thing to do.”

“No wonder you told him to run the operation,” Dale said. “When things go bad, he’ll get all the blame. I can’t believe you would stoop so low.”

“Look, I managed to bribe one of the members of the gang to pass on information to me,” Alex told them. “One of the main problems we have is all the correspondence they send is in code. We have text messages, conversations, and all kinds of written information being exchanged between gang members. But they have used some kind of code to make it difficult for us to decipher. If we manage to find a way to decrypt it, we will know exactly where they are planning on meeting and what kind of deal they are planning on closing. Krill’s operation can act as a front for the real plan. This conversation will stay between us. So even if they have spies here, none of them will find out about it. Once we have more information, we’ll move onto the next phase.”

“Payne,” Saniya called in a soft voice. “I think there is someone here to see you.”

Alex looked up and saw Sue standing there, a smile on her face as she looked at him. Alex excused himself and walked to her, wondering why she was here.

“I’m surprised to see you here,” he said.

“I was just passing by, and I thought of dropping in,” she noted. “You know, get an update of how the case is going.
